From the 17th century, the Boyd family wine merchants from Belfast (Ireland), establish in Bordeaux. It was Jacques Boyd who gave his wine to the vineyard acquired in 1754. But despite the reputation and quality of the wine, the Boyd family went bankrupt.

In 1806,
John Lewis, Bordeaux merchant and shipowner from Scotland and husband of Jacque Boyd's granddaughter, took over Château Brown, but faced financial difficulties, he sold the estate in 1843.
For four generations Château Boyd-Cantenac has belonged to the same family.

Since 1932, the Chateau, belongs to the family Guillemet.
