The bells of the castle Angelus rang morning, noon and evening, to announce the days of work in the vineyards and prayers for men and women who stopped to work for a few minutes.
The painter Jean-François Millet, immortalized this moment in a magnificent work, "The Angelus" which is exhibited at the Museum d'Orsay in Paris.

We find the traces of the institution of the prayer of the angelus from the fifteenth century, it was Pope Calixtus III, who ordered that the bells ring three times a day, after the victorious battle of the Holy Roman Empire on the Ottoman army (July 1456), this is how this prayer took the name of the Angelus. On the label of Château l'Angélus, the bell symbolizes its origin.

Jean de Bouärd de Laforest (King's Bodyguard) moves to Saint-Emilion, and his daughter, Catherine de Sophie de Bouärd de Laforest, the wife of Charles Souffrain de Lavergne, settles in 1795 on the vineyard of Mazerat which is the property of her husband. In the 20th century, Maurice de Bouärd de Laforest inherited the estate and he brought extensions in 1920 (3 hectares), which is named "Angelus".

In 1945
Maurice de Bouärd de Laforest bequeathed the domain to his sons, Jacques and Christian de Bouärd de Laforest.

In 1954
, the property is classified.

In 1985
, the two sons enlarge the property which occupies 20 hectares. Hubert de Bouärd de Laforest (son of Jacques) takes over the estate, he is joined by his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenié (1987), his daughter Stéphanie de Bouärd-Rivoal in 2012 and his nephew Thierry Grenié de Bouärd in 2016.Â
Since the 1990 harvest, the estate is called "Château Angélus"

In 1987
, is born a second wine, "Carillon d'Angélus", a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The N° 3 of Angélus is made with young vines at 85% Merlot and aged in barrels.

In 2012
Stéphanie de Bouärd-Rivoal became the general manager of Angélus and she was joined by her cousin Thierry Grenié de Bouärd (deputy general manager) who represents the 8th generation of the Bouärd family from Laforest.
