The first inhabitants of the island were Australian aborigines who disappeared from the island about 2000 years ago. The island was uninhabited until the early nineteenth century when Europeans discovered it. The first settlers were an intriguing and formidable band of thieves, seal hunters, sailors and escaped convicts who traded animal skins and salt for tobacco and spirits.

Kangaroo Island was named by Captain Matthew Flinders for his abundance of kangaroos, which provided excellent food for the captain and crew after their journey aboard the HMS Investigator.

The French winemaker Bordeaux, Jacques Lurton created The Islander Estate Vineyards near Parndana, an agricultural community in the Heartland district on the island.

The Islander Estate Vineyards winery is rated 5 stars by the Australian wine critic James Halliday, considered an exceptional winery. Several other producers are also building an excellent reputation. These include Rookery, False Cape, Sunset Wines, Bay of Shoals, Dudley Wines, Kangaroo Island Estate and Two Wheeler Creek.

The first vintage of Jacques Lurton in Australia dates back to 1984 with McWilliams in Griffith, NSW. From that moment, Jacques Lurton dreamed of creating his own vineyard in Australia.

When Jacques Lurton visited Kangaroo Island in 1997, he was struck by its natural beauty and recognized the considerable wine potential of the island. Three years later, Jacques Lurton returned to the island to find a place conducive to the culture of wine.
